APRIL YTD 2026 Second Walnut Creek Mutual Water Conservation Report
 MAY 21 2026
Therese Welter

The EBMUD April Bills show a significant increase in water usage in most of the 11 meters, compared to last year's 2025 usage.  The landscape sprinklers were turned on in March, a few weeks earlier than last year.  The March usage increase is 550k gallons or a 17% increase compared to 2025.  In April, the usage increase was much greater at 1,350,144 gallons for a 37% increase.

Looking at the entire year to date from January to April and comparing it to 2025, the overall results show an overall increase of 8% ytd , benefiting from very low usage in January and February.  However, when I compare it to the water usage in 2022 before we started installing the new air conditioners, we still use 29% less water or 6,035,372 gallons less.

We haven't had water usage increases this great and as early in the year, since 2022 when I began tracking each meter.  Landscaping water should be trending down with replacement of lawns and updated monitoring of the sprinklers. This is a lot of landscaping water for this time of the year.

I grouped meter usage into two categories: a/c replacement meters and non-replacement meters. Of the eight non-replacement meters, six show year-to-date increases ranging from 15% to 75%, for a total of 1.4 million gallons above last year. The three meters with a/c replacements were up more than 30% in April but remained down 6% year to date. Across all meters, year-to-date water use is up 8%, or 1,078,660 gallons, compared with last year, partly due to lower usage in January and February. Water costs for the 2025/2026 period have also risen by $19,223 year to date, an increase of 9.3%.For detailed results on each meter’s usage, please refer to the M2rossmoor.com/home website under the Water Conservation Committee

Comparing year-to-date meter usage to previous years highlights the impact of our water conservation efforts, especially as the water-cooled AC replacement project nears completion. Meters are listed in two categories, making both landscaping reductions and homeowners' conservation actions clear in co-ops. Usage differences are outlined below.

The comparison between 2026 and 2022* thru the month of April
(40%) less or (3,490,916)for the 3 meters with A/C replacements
(22%) less or (2,544,456) for the remaining 8 meters
 *prior to AC replacements
2026 gal usage    2025 gal usage    2022 gal usage

3 Meters (468 coops)      5,215,056        5,537,444            8,705,972

Comparing BILLING for 26/25 for all of the meters $19,223* or 9.3% increase
Comparing BILLING for 26/22 for all of the meters is $(19,166)* less or 8 % less than 2022**

**prior to the A/C replacements

How to view water meter usage:

Find your street and entry.  Many streets are in more than one meter, so it is important to look for your entry.  These meters were assigned when Rossmoor was built.  There is a wide range of usage in each meter because there are wide range of co-ops in each meter.  If this was a perfect system, we could divide the usage by the number of coops to see how the 11 meters compare with each other.  However, because of different landscaping designs within each meter, this only works in the winter months when there is little to no landscaping water being used.
